Founded on the 22nd May 1905, the Toowoomba Photographic Society is one of the oldest, but still highly active photographic organisations in Australia. In the early 1900s when the Australian Photographic Society was being formed it needed 100 Foundation Members in order to come into existence. Ten of those came from the Toowoomba Society.

History
Today membership fluctuates between fifty and sixty members who have joined the organisation to share photographic experiences while gathering new techniques and ideas from fellow members. All levels of photographic activity are welcomed in the organisation with membership ranging from part-time professionals to enthusiastic “happy-snappers”
The Society meets at 7.15pm regularly on the evening of the second Tuesday of each month in DeMolay House 90 Margaret Street where a leading photographer from around Queensland or a local member might give a talk on a particular photographic subject and show samples of their work.

Often the speaker will also be the judge for the monthly club competitions. The entries are on set subjects or open and may be in colour or monochrome in both print and slide. Modern technology is widely recognised and used in the work of its members and a digital photography sub-group meets monthly to discuss and practice the latest developments in the processes of modern photography.

Members are also encouraged to enter a wide range of external competitions both locally and interstate and such has been the quality of members work over the years that more than half a dozen of them have entered International competitions.
The Society frequently plays host to State and National photographic conventions. Members are encouraged to attend conventions being held locally and elsewhere in the country to meet with fellow photographers from other states and to catch up on the rapidly advancing technologies and styles of this art form.

The social aspects of the Society are considered vitally important and outings to a wide range of sites in South East Queensland to photograph a diverse variety of subjects are held on weekends through out the year.
